Mark your calendars! The 5th Annual Building Inclusive Community Conference (BICC) is back, offering an engaging and thought-provoking experience designed to foster inclusivity and understanding. This free event will take place on Saturday, February 8, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Lyons Township High School South Campus in Western Springs, IL.

A Keynote Speaker Who Inspires

This year’s keynote speaker, Nestor Gomez, is an award-winning storyteller and creator of 80 Minutes Around the World, a storytelling showcase highlighting immigrant voices. A celebrated figure in the storytelling community, Gomez is an 82-time Moth StorySLAM winner and a 3-time Chicago Moth GrandSLAM champion. His powerful narrative on immigration and resilience will serve as an inspiration to all attendees, setting the stage for meaningful conversations on diversity and inclusion.

Engaging Workshops & Meaningful Discussions

BICC provides a space where community members can learn, grow, and take action toward creating a more inclusive society. The conference features two rounds of workshops led by educators, experts, and community leaders covering a wide range of topics, including:

  • Building an Inclusive Community Through Local History – Exploring how history shapes inclusion.
  • Protecting the Right to Read – Addressing book bans and the fight for intellectual freedom.
  • Understanding Cultural Behaviors – How cultural differences influence communication and learning.
  • Supporting Transgender Youth and Adults – What allyship looks like locally and nationally.
  • Inclusivity in Education: Dual Language Programs – The power of bilingual education.
  • Mental Health & Community Resilience – Tools for emotional well-being and support.

Attendees can choose from a variety of sessions that best align with their interests and community impact goals.

More Than Just a Conference—A Community Experience

Beyond the workshops, the conference fosters community engagement through unique activities, including:
✔️ Student-led table discussions over a free pizza lunch (sponsored by Joan Smothers of Smothers Group / Compass Real Estate) on what an inclusive community looks like.
✔️ Vendor tables featuring local organizations offering valuable resources and services.
✔️ The Embracing Our Differences Art Exhibit—a thought-provoking display, courtesy of First Presbyterian Church of Western Springs, celebrating diversity and perspective.
