The La Grange Public Library is continuing to invest in a welcoming and comfortable experience for the community with the next phase of its second floor rejuvenation project, beginning August 13.
The project will refresh a long-underutilized portion of the second floor while bringing new furnishings and other improvements to the space.
A major focus will be the former Quiet Reading Room, which has been a deactivated Quiet Zone since 2024. As part of the rejuvenation, the Library will update this area to make better use of the space for patrons.
Additional improvements will include replacing carpet on the north side of the second floor, shifting shelving and replacing older furniture with new, comfortable seating.
The improvements are the latest chapter in the La Grange Public Library’s long history of adapting to the changing needs of the community.
The Library traces its beginnings to 1896, when the La Grange Women’s Club helped establish a lending library. Its first dedicated building was constructed with support from an Andrew Carnegie grant in 1903, followed by a new facility in 1968. The current Library building at La Grange Road and Cossitt Avenue opened in 2007 with expanded meeting spaces, additional public computers, wireless internet access and other modern amenities.
Today, the Library serves as much more than a place to find a book. Its resources connect community members with educational opportunities, technology, entertainment, events and one another. Its mission centers on enriching the community by inspiring connections, providing access to meaningful resources and encouraging curiosity in an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere.
The second floor rejuvenation continues that commitment by updating the Library’s physical environment to better serve visitors today and into the future.
