From Kosovo to Chicago: The Inspiring Journey of Balkan Bakery’s Founder

When you step into Balkan Bakery in La Grange, you’re greeted with the smell of fresh breads, flaky burek, and sweets that taste like home. But behind every pastry is a story as rich and layered as the treats themselves.

Olja Igic’s journey began in Kosovo, where war and hardship forced her to leave everything behind—except a small black recipe book and her two children. With resilience and faith, she rebuilt her life in Chicago. Her recipes, passed down through generations, quickly captured local hearts. By 2007, Olja’s dream became reality when she opened Balkan Bakery on La Grange Road.

Today, the bakery is not just a shop—it’s a community landmark, serving both Balkan favorites and local traditions. Under the leadership of her daughter-in-law, Marija Pejkovic, Balkan Bakery continues to thrive, blending old-world flavors with new-world spirit.

✨ It’s a story of perseverance, family, and the power of food to bring people together.
