Looking to try something creative this spring? The La Grange Art League is bringing back a hands-on silk painting workshop series this April, offering participants the opportunity to design and create their own one-of-a-kind silk scarves.
This three-week workshop takes place on Saturdays from 1:00–3:30 PM on April 18, April 25, and May 2, and is open to ages 16 and up. Led by instructor Carolyn Thomas-Davidoff, the class introduces participants to three distinct silk dyeing techniques, each producing unique and visually striking results.
Participants will explore:
- Microwave Dyeing, a process that uses heat to blend colors across silk, creating soft transitions and vibrant finishes
- Salt Dyeing, which uses salt to draw out pigments and form organic patterns and textures
- Acid Dyeing, where dyes are combined with citric acid and heat to produce bold, dynamic designs
The workshop is designed to be accessible for all skill levels, whether you’re completely new to textile arts or looking to expand your creative toolkit. By the end of the session, participants will leave with their own handcrafted silk scarves and practical experience with multiple dyeing techniques.
For those concerned about scheduling, the Art League notes that make-up instruction will be available if a session is missed.
