Downtown La Grange recently welcomed a distinctive new destination for home décor enthusiasts with the opening of Swell House, a thoughtfully curated boutique offering vintage, antique, and modern pieces designed to help customers create homes filled with character, warmth, and personality.
Owned by Jess Engledow, Swell House features an ever-changing collection of decorative objects, artwork, lighting, textiles, furniture, and one-of-a-kind finds sourced from a variety of places. The shop officially opened its storefront in downtown La Grange in April 2026 after beginning as Swell Vintage in 2025 with a small booth space inside Jackson Square Mall.

From Passion Project to Storefront Destination
Engledow’s love of decorating, thrifting, estate sales, and discovering unique treasures inspired her journey into the home décor business. After spending years in client service and several years at home raising her children, she decided to pursue her passion more intentionally by opening a booth in a local antique mall.
The experience allowed her to refine her aesthetic, test ideas, and build relationships with customers. When the opportunity arose to open a dedicated storefront in downtown La Grange, she embraced the chance to create a more immersive shopping experience.
The business name reflects the atmosphere Engledow hopes to create. “Swell” offers a subtle nod to the past while conveying an elevated sense of style. As the business evolved beyond vintage pieces to include modern home décor, the name became Swell House to better represent the full scope of its offerings.
A Curated Approach to Home Design
What sets Swell House apart is its emphasis on timeless style rather than passing trends. Engledow personally sources every item in the shop, focusing on pieces with texture, character, functionality, and lasting appeal.
Rather than creating a store centered on a single design aesthetic, she strives to offer something for a variety of tastes and homes. The result is a welcoming environment where customers can discover meaningful pieces that help tell their own stories.
Swell House is designed to feel approachable and constantly evolving, with new inventory arriving regularly both in-store and online.

Rooted in the La Grange Community
For Engledow, opening Swell House in La Grange was a natural choice. As a resident of the village’s West End neighborhood, she was drawn to the community’s strong support of local businesses, walkable downtown, and historic character.
She and her family regularly participate in community events and enjoy many of the programs supported by the La Grange Business Association, including the Farmers Market, Pet Parade, and West End Arts Festival.
After joining the LGBA in May 2026, Engledow has already begun connecting with fellow business owners and learning from their experiences. She is also looking forward to becoming more involved in volunteer opportunities and community initiatives in the future.
Looking Ahead
As Swell House continues to grow, Engledow remains focused on maintaining the qualities that have defined the business from the beginning: carefully curated merchandise, a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and a commitment to helping customers create homes that feel personal and lived in.
Her vision is for Swell House to become a lasting part of the La Grange community—a place residents return to for inspiration, connection, and unique finds that make a house feel like home.
