6th Annual Building Inclusive Community Conference Set for February 7

The 6th Annual Building Inclusive Community Conference will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Lyons Township High School – South Campus (4900 Willow Springs Road, Western Springs, IL). The event is free to attend and invites community members, families, educators, students, and local service providers to engage in learning, dialogue, and actions that strengthen inclusive culture and community connectedness.

Organized by the Lyons Township Mental Health Commission (LTMHC) in collaboration with area partners including the  CommUNITY Diversity Group, the conference is built around the mission of encouraging a welcoming and inclusive environment by supporting understanding, empathy, and equitable access to local resources.

Keynote and Community Focus

The conference’s keynote address will be delivered by Víctor Gómez, Illinois Teacher of the Year, an educator recognized for his commitment to inclusive teaching practices, student empowerment, and thoughtful community engagement. His remarks will set the tone for a day of reflection and learning focused on the lived experience of belonging and dignity for all.

Dynamic Workshops and Panel Discussion

The conference features two rounds of interactive workshops offering eleven or more sessions developed by and for community members. Topics cover a wide array of relevant and timely issues, including mental health supports, diversity education, equity in schools and workplaces, accessibility practices, and navigating community resources.

A highlight of the program will be a panel discussion on accessibility, bringing together representatives from six local organizations alongside Ms. Wheelchair Illinois, Dr. Carrie Muderink (Class of 2009, Lyons Township High School). The discussion is designed to illuminate barriers to access and the strategies that organizations and residents are using to build a more inclusive built and social environment.

Resource Fair and Connections

Parallel to the workshop sessions, the conference will host a community resource fair where attendees can connect directly with non-profits, service agencies, and local initiatives offering supports across education, health, housing, equity, and well-being.

Lunch and Networking

A pizza and salad lunch — sponsored by Joan Smothers of Smothers Group / Compass Real Estate — will provide an informal opportunity for participants to network, share insights, and build community relationships.

New Community Drive: Supporting Neighbors in Need

In addition to learning and connection, the conference is hosting a community giving initiative. Attendees are invited to bring toiletries and essential items to support two local programs:

  • BEDS Plus Care and Resource Center — serving individuals and families experiencing housing insecurity.

  • La Grange Public Library Care Pantry — providing hygiene and personal care items to community members in need.

Accessibility and Educator Benefits

The conference is designed to be inclusive for all participants. American Sign Language (ASL) and Spanish-language interpretation services will be available throughout the event. Educators attending the conference can earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs), making this both a community resource and a professional development opportunity.
